Mokgadi Mabela: South Africa’s remarkable third-generation bee farmer and honey producer with 360 beehives.

Meet – Mokgadi Mabela, remarkable Bee Farmer, Honey Producer and Founder of Native Nosi, a beekeeping company that specialises in the production of raw South African honey.

Mokgadi is a third-generation beekeeper. Her grandfather, the first bee-farmer in their family, used his savings to start a small beekeeping operation. Many years later she continues the tradition but in her own way. Using the knowledge passed down from her grandfather and father.

“Growing up, we always had honey in the house, however, I had no plans of being a beekeeper myself. I graduated from the University of Pretoria with an International Relations Degree and worked in corporate.”

“In the workplace I realised the inferior quality of honey colleagues used during tea time and offered my Dad’s raw honey which they couldn’t get enough of. Orders and orders started pilling in and when the demand exceeded supply, we started sourcing additional honey from rural farmers in Limpopo who at the time had no access to formal markets. When we realised that was also fast running out, my Dad suggested I get beehives to make my own honey, so began my journey in beekeeping,” said Mokgadi Mabela.

Fast forward to today, Mokgadi is an award-winning bee farmer and honey prroducer with 360 beehives.

Her honey at Native Nosi is made from these beehives and the balance is sourced from rural farmers who produce raw quality honey but have no access to urban markets.

Native Nosi offtakes honey from these rural farmers and integrates it into its value chain for honey lovers all over to savor and enjoy.
